Town of Miami Lakes History

29,361 people call Miami Lakes home - that is according to the census taken in 2010. This suburb is an 'incorporated town' and an area designated by census in Miami-Dade County in the U.S. State of Florida.

Master planner Lester Collins was responsible for the undulating tree-lined roads and lakes of the original development which can be found to the east of the Palmetto Expressway. The natural beauty of the development is unusual - the area is characterized by square grids of streets, a lack of trees and rectangular lakes. The original Miami Lakes development is located on the east side of the recently proclaimed Town of Miami Lakes. Here one can find malls, tot-lot spaces, and the old Main Street. Large parts of Miami Lakes is still owned by the Graham family, including apartment blocks, retail centers and offices, as well as some land that has yet to be developed. The town itself is a prime example of the 'new urbanism' movement - characterized by shopping and service outlets close to the homes of those they serve. The town is also characterized by its narrow, pedestrian-friendly streets and green spaces.

Miami Lakes became the 31st municipality of Miami-Dade County when it was incorporated in December 2000. It is now considered one of the youngest towns in the County. The almost 30,000 residents are serviced by the 1,100 businesses that have their operations in the town.
